A Conversation with Jennifer…
How would you describe your style?
Lush. Opulent. That’s what I love, that is my style. And lush can be expressed as elegant, classic, modern, or whimsical. But whether my clients prefer elegance or whimsy, they are always delighted with the choices I offer because I add a “wink”: I add the unexpected. I like to incorporate a touch of the interesting, the unique, the unpredictable — berries, pods, fruits, other interesting elements. I like to think beyond the borders to come up with distinctive touches that set my clients’ events apart from the norm. Even personal flowers such as boutonnieres and corsages are exciting. They always contain little touches, finishes, and elements to make them stand out.
What is important to you?
Delighting my clients. I suppose that sounds cliché, but it’s true. And delighting a client is accomplished by getting the details right and by insisting on the very best quality, not only in the flowers but also in the accessories. Fortunately, I have a strong eye for detail, and I’m a perfectionist at heart!
Give me some examples.
I insist on roses that can be coaxed to optimum openness, tulips that won’t droop, petals and foliage that are unblemished. And I always search for flowers in just the right hue — it’s not enough for me to find flowers that merely blend in, that are in the same general family of color.
As for quality, I hand-select every flower — that way I know every flower has met my rigorous standards. They must be fresh. The flowers come from a number of wonderful growers and flower importers at the San Francisco Flower Market. And choosing the flowers is just the beginning — I take extra care to condition your flowers so they’re at their peak during your event.
You mention accessories when you talk about Lush’s style. What do you mean?
Well, take ribbons — that they must be the perfect color goes without saying. But they also must be the perfect texture to complement the flowers. Maybe an elegant French ribbon works for some, but others require a softer organza, while yet others require a more textural grosgrain or even taffeta.
And ribbons are only part of the picture. I always go the extra mile to find the right containers, candles, linens, or other decorative elements to enhance my clients’ events. I’m happy when I create the perfect atmosphere, when I can evoke the image and feeling my client dreamed of.
You’ve mentioned color a number of times…
Color! I love color and am not afraid to use it. I feel like a painter whose palette is flowers instead of paints. Just give me some fabric swatches, and I can create bouquets to perfectly complement and accent the bride’s gown, the bridesmaids’ dresses, even the groom’s tuxedo. Or for other events, I can develop a theme of color that clients can use as a base for the entire event. Color is powerful. It can set an energetic tone or a subdued tone or whatever the event calls for.
What would you say sets Lush apart?
Some larger floral design companies mass-produce multiple events in an assembly-line fashion, sometimes resulting in uninspired, cookie-cutter designs. I truly care about making each event unique. I am intimately involved in the design process, from the first consultation right up to and including the day of the event. My hand touches everything that goes out of my studio, and I have set the bar for quality very high. My work reflects my deep love — my passion — for flowers as well as my respect for floral design as an art form.
And you know what? Believe it or not, after all these years of working with so many beautiful brides, I still remember all their names and what their bridal bouquet looked like. And that’s because each bouquet was unique, was a reflection of each bride and her individual beauty and spirit.
